Drink more water to avoid kidney ailments

Chennai: People with kidney stones have a higher risk of developing chronic kidney diseases and chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension at a later stage, according to recent research from the National Health and Nutrition Survey. Doctors say that one of the most common factors that lead to the formation of a kidney stone is the lack of water in the body.

Chronic kidney diseases are 1.5 times more likely to occur due to obstructive kidney stones, which are formed in the body due to a lower intake of drinking water.

These cases are more common in women than in men who are three times more likely to need dialysis treatment because of kidney stones, the study reveals. While the effects of kidney stones can worsen body systems, drinking adequate water can help prevent the risk of kidney stones. Drinking enough water helps the kidneys eliminate all the toxins from our body. Water maintains a balance of all body fluids, regulates blood pressure and aids in the formation of red blood cells, experts say.

“Kidney stones are the result of an accumulation of dissolved minerals in the inner lining of the kidneys.” According to research, people with kidney stones have a significantly higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease that can even lead to diabetes and hypertension. Drinking enough water helps eliminate accumulated salts, which will likely become stones at a later stage, “said Dr. MR Pari, consulting urologist, Fortis Malar.

Although kidney stones are also formed due to genetic conditions as well, diet and lifestyle practices also contribute to stone formation. While diet plays an important role for a clean and healthy kidney, proper hydration helps prevent the risk of kidney stones.

“The intake of water is connected to the production of urine and people who produce 2 to 2.5 liters of urine a day have a 50 percent less chance of developing kidney stones than those who produce less. drink enough water, the urine will have higher concentrations of waste, basically salts that can form stones. The kidneys can eliminate toxins from our body, maintain the balance of all bodily fluids, regulate blood pressure and help the formation of blood cells reds, “said Dr. K Natarajan, chief urologist.

People tend to believe that since most kidney stones are made of calcium, a diet low in calcium can reduce the risk of kidney stones. However, urologists consider this as a myth. It was found that people who had calcium-rich diets had a one-third lower risk of kidney stones than those with low-calcium diets.

A study conducted at the Harvard Schoo of Public Health also revealed the same, stating that a diet rich in calcium actually blocks a chemical action that causes the formation of stones. Therefore, doctors recommend a diet rich in calcium to avoid the risk of kidney stones, but calcium supplements should be avoided.
