MiG 29K crashes in Goa naval base, civilian flights disrupted

A 29K MiG aircraft from the Indian Navy deviated from the runway and crashed at INS Hansa’s base in Goa today, a senior official said.

The apprentice pilot managed to eject safely from the plane, which caught fire.

The arrival and departure of civilian flights at the Goa airport were delayed due to the incident, said the director of the Goa airport, B C H Negi.

The airport is located inside the naval base.

“It is likely that all flights will be delayed at the Goa airport because the runway is closed due to the urgent operational requirements of Indian Navys,” said Goa airport authorities on Twitter.

The incident took place around 12 noon and efforts were made to extinguish the flames.

Eyewitnesses said the plane left the runway before it could take off.

The officer of the flag commanding the area of Goa, Punit Behl, confirmed the incident, but said that more details would be known later.
