Firecrackers: experts welcome SC ban

Doctors and environmentalists have welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision prohibiting the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR and expressed hope that it will guarantee a relatively cleaner Diwali this year.

“We appreciate the decision of the Supreme Court over the ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR.This may provide some relief from the episodic levels of air pollution in October, but levels of pollution in northern India are several times higher than national standards over the winter months, therefore we must also consider a stricter action plan, “Greenpeace India said.

The contamination affects all parts of the body, whether it is the skin, the eyes, the nose, the heart or the lungs, said Dr. Sandeep Nayar, HOD, Respiratory Medicine, Allergy and Sleep Disorders, BLK Super Specialty Hospital.

“The underlying diseases like asthma are also aggravated and there is no doubt that the number and severity of illnesses have multiplied in the city,” said Dr. Nayar.
