Amitabh Bachchan Follows Congress Leaders on Twitter, Fuels Speculation


NEW DELHI: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan started following some top congressional leaders on Twitter lately, prompting speculation about his sudden interest in the party that was once close to him and from which he left.

After following the president of Congress, Rahul Gandhi, and the official handling of the party’s Twitter, he began to follow top party leaders such as P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, Ahmed Patel, Ashok Gehlot, Ajay Maken, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot and CP Joshi, from this month.

Recently he also began to follow other congressional leaders such as Manish Tewari, Shakeel Ahmed, Sanjay Nirupam, Randeep Surjewala Priyanka Chaturvedi and Sanjay Jha on the microblog site.

Mr. Bachchan, who was once close to the Nehru-Gandhi family and was a friend of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is currently the ambassador of the brand in Gujarat. It has more than 33.1 million followers on Twitter and follows only 1,689 people. His sudden love for Congress and some other opposition leaders has taken social networks by surprise.

Some other opposition leaders whom the actor has recently started include RJD chief Lalu Prasad, his daughter Misa Bharti, Jit (U) ‘s Nitish Kumar, CPI – M Sitaram Yechury. It also follows the official Twitter handling of the RJD, Omar Abdullah of NC and Supriya Sule of NCP.

The leaders of AAP who began to follow recently are Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai, Sanjay Singh, Kumar Vishwas and Ashish Khetan.

Manish Tewari, who was one of the congressional leaders recently followed by the actor, thanked him but said nothing more about the timing and political importance.
