19 killed as more than 100 years of building collapses


Mumbai, Aug 31 (PTI) A residential building of more than a century old collapsed today in the congested area of ​​Bhendi Bazar in southern Mumbai, killing at least 19 people and injuring 12 others, officials said.

They were pronounced dead at J J State Hospital, where they were transferred from the rubble, while heavy machinery rescue teams continued to search for survivors of the accident, a senior police official said.

About 30 more are still feared trapped under the mounds of concrete and braided iron bars.

The process of identifying the bodies is on. At least 12 people injured in the incident were carried out on stretchers and rushed to hospital J J in ambulances that are faced with difficulties navigating the narrow streets because of the crowd that has gathered around the place.

The official also said that five members of the NDRF fire department and a jawan were also injured during rescue operations. They have also been transferred to J J Hospital.

Fire officials said about nine families were living in the dilapidated Husaini building.

The building also housed a play school, but the children had not yet arrived when the tragedy occurred.
