AHMEDABAD: Sixteen workers and three children were killed and six others were injured after a truck they were traveling on overturned a road in Bhavnagar in Gujarat, 170 kilometers from Ahmedabad.
The accident occurred when the truck loaded with cement while taking a turn at high speed lost control and overturned on the road.
The truck was coming from the port of Pipavav in Bhavnagar, police said.
“There were 25 workers riding in the truck, the vehicle became a tortoise in the early hours of the morning and 19 workers were crushed to death,” said Ahmedabad Police Superintendent RV Asari.
Of the 18 people who died at the scene, 12 were women and three were children; another person died in a hospital, police said.
The other six injured people have been admitted to a nearby hospital, the official said.
“The accident seems to have taken place when the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle, the driver fled the scene of the accident, the police have formed teams to look for him,” Asari said.
“My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives due to an accident near the Bhavnagar – Ahmedabad highway in Gujarat, I pray that those who were injured in the accident recover as soon as possible,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi .
