Mumbai: Actor Shahid Kapoor said today that the cast and crew of ‘Padmaavat’ had to be “politically correct” since the film was involved in a protracted controversy and that they had to keep a lot of “emotions” under control.

The actor, who played Maha Rawal Ratan Singh in the period drama directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, said the team had to endure a lot in “these last few years and a half.”

“We lost a lot of things, we had to make a lot of sacrifices, we had to learn to keep a lot of emotions in our hearts for a year and a half under control, we had to be politically correct, the movie had to go through a lot, but today we feel vindicated, “Shahid told reporters as part of Lakme Fashion Week Summer / Resort 2018.

The appearance of the actor as the star of the show, along with his wife Mira Rajput who walked the ramp for the first time, for the designer Anita Dongre’s collection ‘Songs of Summer’ was a well-maintained surprise.

Shahid also joked that the controversy surrounding the film had assumed such large proportions in the media that they did not need to promote the film.

The film, which is based on the “Padmaavat” of the 16th-century poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi, was embroiled in controversy after several Rajput groups, including the Karni Sena, claimed that it distorted history, a claim repeatedly denied by Bhansali.

Historians are divided over whether Padmavati really existed.

The film starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid and Ranveer Singh was released on January 25 after the Central Board of Cinematographic Certification (CBFC) authorized it last month with a ‘U / A’ certificate and five modifications, including the change of title of ‘Padmavati’ to ‘Padmaavat’.

Shahid said that the film was not released in some parts of the country, such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa, but he was glad that he was loved wherever it was launched.

“We are very, very happy and grateful, this country has always supported good films and that is what happened, the love and the result have been more than I expected,” he said.

Mira said that ‘Padmaavat’ is one of Shahid’s best performances in his career.

“To play a character who does not have the support of many words is when you really should shine your talent as an actor.” Shahid did that so easily and you can see it on screen, “she said.
